10 on Tuesday

Ok, I have news. I was wrong. Kind of. It did snow yesterday. It started at about 7 last night and seemed to accumulate pretty quickly. When Oklahoma State called off classes for today, rumor’s started flying that Stillwater Public Schools would soon do the same. From the looks of what was happening outside there didn’t seem any way that we would be going to class today. Finally, at about 10:00pm the SPS website announced that we would be having a snow day. Woohoo! I was wrong about the meteorologists being wrong and I didn’t care one little bit. We were getting a snow day people!!!!

Here’s the thing, by about noon today it was gone. In fact, the treacherous driving conditions during this mornings commute consisted of damp streets. That was it. I saw one Mom tweet about her son looking outside this morning and being afraid that “they could change their mind”. Thank goodness they can’t!

So what do you do on a snow day when there’s pretty much no snow? Here’s how our family spent the day!

1. We slept in. Yep. Well, Madi and I did. Brad had to get up and go to work and everyone else was up by about 8:00 cause they’re weird. But Madi and I? We got our sleep on y’all.

2. Senior pictures. You might remember that I am doing a mini-session for Madi every month since this is her senior year. I’ve only done sneak peeks for August and September. The other months are all just sitting waiting for me to work on them. Soon, little images, soon. I’ve been dying to do a session in the snow and the only 2 times that it has done anything, it’s melted super fast so I figured today would be perfect. Here’s where sleeping in is bad. By the time Madi and I got up the snow was pretty much gone. We were determined though and drove around until we found a little area that had been sheltered by the sun and we got February pictures done!

3. Had a great time giggling at the Facebook posts about our blizzard. I do know that a lot of the state got dumped on and have lost power and had all sorts of awful problems. I’m not making light of that situation at all. But I did get a good giggle from some of my local friends who obviously felt the same way that I did about the blizzard here in Stillwater.

4. Shop. I’m trying not to do so much of this but it’s not working. Here’s the thing, I’ve lost some weight and I have a wedding in Illinois this weekend where the high is going to be 29 and the ground will be covered in snow. None of my pants fit me. So I really didn’t have a choice but to go shopping. Right? Madi and I went after her mini-session and hit a few stores and now we both have something to wear that we won’t freeze in. Hopefully.

5. Work. Sadly, my boss didn’t cancel work. ;) I’m SO close to being done with all of my editing. I currently just have 2 weddings to finished editing and 1 maternity session. Woo. Hoo. I have a lot of personal things to edit as well but to be that close to being caught up with my paid work is pretty much awesome sauce. While finishing up a gallery today I found this gem that I took of Sadie while waiting for a senior to change. Love those eyeballs!

6. Clean/Organize. Ok, not really. I had huge plans to finish organizing the study and while I did sort through a couple things I didn’t really make the dent I had hoped to. I’m praying that I can get that done next week when I’m back. We are in the process of putting our house on the market again and it’s just never going to happen if I don’t just get busy!

7. Paint the boat. Blog post of “the boat” coming soon. Long story short, my son is anticipating a flood. Kidding. He is however building a boat in the garage and today was a big day in that it’s time to paint. He talked Teagan into helping him and the two of them got the first coat on her.

8. Run. Not me, are you crazy?! Actually, I am planning on getting back into running soon. Not yet though. One of us did take the time to hit the treadmill and get stretched this afternoon though. You go girl!

9. Psych marathon. My family loves watching Psych. If you’ve never seen it then you’re missing out. Eli actually got the girls hooked on it and now they get on Netflix and enjoy episodes even when he’s not around. There was also some homework going on in here too. (Ignore my unmade bed. The kids had a snow day and got comfy in my room!)

10. Enjoy being together! That’s the best part of a snow day. Everyone home and together. And while we weren’t really “stuck”, we still spent the day enjoying the presence of those we love. Nothing beats that!

Monday Musings

Whew.  What a weekend!  I had so hoped to get this post up earlier but today just flew by with all sorts of craziness and I’m finally, just now, finding myself with some quiet time to sit and think.  If you don’t like hearing about other people’s kids then now is the time to click away.  Otherwise, read on!

My Eli has been “dating” sweet Rachel for quite some time now.  I’m not sure why I felt the need to put the word dating in quotes.  Maybe because it makes it seem less real that I have kids old enough to date?

Whatever.

So as the semi-formal dance approached it was assumed that they would be going together but he hadn’t actually asked her yet.  These days, guys go to great lengths with pomp and circumstance in asking their dates to go to a dance with them.  Eli had a couple of Rachel’s friends come over and they were going to spell “semi” out in candles on the driveway.  But it was windy.  Like SUPER windy.  So I snuck them in and they put the candles on display in the entryway.  Eli had to bring the candles down from the bonus room where he and Rachel and my little girls were all watching tv together.  To get out of the room he told Rachel that he had to go see a dead cat.  What?  Who even says that?  Apparently Eli does, and Rachel said, “Um.  Ok.”

Excuse me while I dab my tears.  How do I have a kid not only old enough to date but who is such a sweet heart?!    So.  Very.  Verklempt.

Saturday night was the big night and I wasn’t here.  Boohoo!  I had a good reason though, I’ll tell you why in a minute.  In the meantime, check out the super cute couples!  I set my camera up for Brad the day before I left because I had to have some documentation.  I feel certain that the girls had terrific looking shoes on, although I’m not sure because he cut their feet off.   What can you do.

So while Brad was home taking pictures of the semi attendee’s, I was in Tulsa with the little girls because Sadie had her first solo competition.  She was SO nervous and Teagan was the sweetest little sister and so supportive and ready to help in any way possible.  I tweeted that morning that I wasn’t sure who was more nervous, Sadie or ME!

Let me just say, she did AMAZING.  Seriously.  Working up to this first solo attempt I kinda wondered if she would make it through.  (Is that bad?  It’s bad, isn’t it.  Shhhhh, don’t tell her I said that!) She struggled with stamina and some of the moves in the dance and her confidence.  But it was the BEST run she’d ever done and she ended up getting 2nd place in her category.  I am SO proud of her for getting out there and facing her fears and I just know it’s going to be better every single time she preforms!

On Sunday she performed in her three group numbers and ALL THREE took 1st in their category.  Her dance, So Cold, even won for best choreography and was chosen to go on to finals.  And then, then…THEY WON!  This sweet group of girls who earlier in their busy day took the time to gather together with all their friends for a devotional since they were missing church TOOK FIRST PLACE!  Again, verklempt.  Talk amongst yourselves.

So that was my crazy busy weekend in a nutshell.  You might be wondering where Madi was during all of this.  Well let me tell you.  She was on a date with her new suitor.  (Please say “suitor” like they do in O Brother Where Art Thou.  It makes it much more fun.)  And our Monday started off another crazy busy week with Sadie getting braces (I just drugged her and sent her to sleep) and both Eli and Teagan eventually home from school.  It’s that time of year for the Stewarts.  Let the sickness roll!

Oh hey, one more thing.  The competition was being streamed live so Brad watched, and recorded Sadie’s solo on Saturday night.  Eli happened to be here to have pictures taken when it came on so you can hear Brad yelling to come watch.  Obviously, not the best quality but you can get a little peek at what her solo looks like.

Ten on Tuesday : It’s BACK!

If you have followed my blog then you might remember right about this time last year when I started the blog series “Ten on Tuesday”.  I did a really good job keeping up with them until summer hit and things got crazy up in here.  I planned to get back on track in the fall but, um.  Yeah, not so much.  However, I’m BACK with the first installment of Ten on Tuesday for 2013.  I’m not promising that there will be something posted every week because apparently I have issues keeping up with that.  I will promise to have at least 5 of these this year.  See what I did there?  A realistic goal!  Go me!

So here’s the thing…I have a secret.  Actually, it’s not a secret to my closest friends who see me regularly.  It’s just not something that I have shared in a public place like my blog or Facebook.  Here’s the thing…I’m on a diet.

Ha!

Like that’s news.  Aren’t I always on a diet?  Why yes, yes I am.  This one is different though.  After a lifetime of yo-yo dieting, losing weight and then gaining it back (plus more), I have found something that is really working.  (Yes, I’ve said THAT before too.  I’m serious this time though.  For.  Real.)  I am currently in a program called Grace and Strength. It’s hard and wonderful and a struggle and rewarding all wrapped into one. My favorite thing about the Grace and Strength Lifestyle? The community of new friends that I have, the coach that I am in contact with daily and the Christian sisters who help me keep things in check.

(Wondering where my Ten comes in? Hold on a sec. It’s close.)

One of my sisters in Christ is my new friend Jaclyn. She has a blog and she posted something yesterday that really made me think. It was all about motives and the reason why we are all trying to lose weight. It really made me think. And just like Jaclyn mentions in her own post, none of the “whys” I initially came up with were glorifying to God.

EEK.

She goes on to challenge us to prayerfully consider some reasons for weight loss that DO glorify God. And I love them all. And…there are 10 of them. (See where I’m going here?)

If weight loss (or body image or food addiction or…you get the picture) has ever been a stronghold in your life, then I hope you’ll visit my friends blog. It’s definitely worth the trip over!

Time to check my motives.
